What’s free

Tabata Stopwatch Pro’s free version limits the number of workouts every 7 days. Pro Features, $19.99 on the US App Store (it also lists a subscription at $19.99, without saying the period), add unlimited workouts, saved presets, announcement settings, chest-strap heart-rate monitors, more sounds and no ads. Cero’s free version has every feature with no workout limit; it saves 2 timers and shows ads. Cero Pro adds unlimited saved timers and no ads, for $2.99 a month or $14.99 once.

Tabata in each app

Tabata Stopwatch Pro opens with the classic Tabata ready to run, and lets you change the countdown, warm-up, exercise, rest, recovery and cooldown, sets and cycles. Cero’s Tabata template is 20 seconds on and 10 off for 8 rounds by default, and you can change any interval. See how to set a Tabata timer and the original Tabata study.

Apple Watch and heart rate

Tabata Stopwatch Pro runs on iPhone and iPad, with no Apple Watch app; with Pro it reads chest-strap heart-rate monitors and writes workouts, calorie estimates and heart rate to Apple Health. Cero runs on Apple Watch, pairs with a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor, and its Adaptive HR can extend rest until your heart rate drops, free. Both save workouts to Apple Health.

Ads and privacy

Tabata Stopwatch Pro’s label lists location, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics used to track you, and “Contains Advertising”; the App Store rates it 13+. Cero’s label lists only usage data, and the App Store rates it 9+.

Languages

Tabata Stopwatch Pro is in English. Cero is in 31 languages.

Is Tabata Stopwatch Pro free?

It’s free to download, but the free version limits the number of workouts every 7 days. Pro Features cost $19.99 on the US App Store.

Is Tabata Stopwatch Pro the same as Tabata Timer and HIIT Timer?

Yes. The App Store lists it as Tabata Timer and HIIT Timer; its description and its developer’s website call it Tabata Stopwatch Pro.

Does Tabata Stopwatch Pro work on Apple Watch?

Its listing doesn’t list Apple Watch. Cero has an Apple Watch app with heart rate.

Is Cero a good alternative to Tabata Stopwatch Pro?

If you don’t want a weekly workout limit, or want Apple Watch or a language other than English, yes. If you want classic Tabata with no setup at all, Tabata Stopwatch Pro opens ready to go; Cero’s Tabata template is one tap away.
